The fact that you can select all the files you want to upload from one browse window instead of having to click "browse" for every file you're uploading :S

Yea, I've not worked out how it's done. I've got so far as to realise that it's to do with Flash of some sort. I'll look into it further.

Wordpress also supports a multi-upload of that nature, and it is definitely flash based. Maybe it's worth looking into?

Facebook does it too but I am pretty sure their applet is Java-based.

I know you can get an uploader with YUI but I'm sure there are some open source solutions out there.
Also Safari 4 supports the "multiple" parameter. <input type="file" multiple />

I believe so, yeah. But only Safari supports it so far.
If you want I can have a look around to see if I can find any free flash- /java- /other-based solutions for multiple file uploads
